San Francisco #2 Page #2

Ray Stevens again won the Battle Royal, which was now held in January 1972. The Battle Royal was also famous for having wrestlers from outside the territory enter the match.  Man Mountain Mike advertised as over 600 pounds and Haystacks Calhoun also over 600 lbs. were frequent entrants in the SF Battle Royal as was the Big Cat Ernie Ladd, a 6”9 former pro football player. The 1973 Battle Royal was won by the main villain in the area, The Great Mephisto. Mephisto’s main gimmick next to a slave girl named Shalina was a loaded boot.  The Great Mephisto was quite close to the Original Sheik in gimmick but in no way was he a copycat. His wrestling style and interview qualities made him one of the best wrestlers in the history of the San Francisco region.

The high chief Peter Maivia won the 1974 Battle Royal held on January 26th. Chief Peter Maivia with his Samoan suplex and Samoan drops was always one of the favorites of the fans, and was one of the great wrestlers. The late great Maivia is now known for being the Rock’s grandfather

The January 1975 Battle Royal was won by the second most popular wrestler to ever wrestle in San Francisco and that was Pat Patterson. In the days before Patterson was the first Intercontinental champions and one of the stooges in the WWF, he was the main draw in a SF territory without Ray Stevens.

The 1976 Battle Royal was held by Mr. Fuji, who was the United States champion in this booking office and is probably best remembered as a member of the WWWF tag team championship with Toru Tanaka.

The 1977 Battle Royal was won by the King of Battle Royals Andre the Giant. The late Andre in those days didn’t have a territory he called home but always was in California for both the LA and SF Battle Royals.

Don Muraco won the 1978 Battle Royal. Muraco had successful runs in this region as both a heel and a face.

Ron Starr won the 1979 Battle Royal and was one of the headliners in the area at the time.

The 1980 Battle Royal was won by Ray Stevens and included on the card the likes of NWA champion Harley Race. Although Ray Stevens was getting on in years at this point on that card Harley Race defended the Title vs. Stevens in a match that I as a fan remember for all the 2 counts and kickouts. To me it was the last time I remember seeing Ray Stevens wrestle in person and one of the best matches I have seen in my years as a wrestling fan.

The last San Francisco Battle Royal was held January 24,1981 and was won by Pat Patterson. It seems only fitting that Stevens and Patterson won the last two Battle Royals held in this booking office as respectfully they were the two biggest wrestling stars in the history of this promotion.

NEXT MONTH:

We will have more on the San Francisco Booking office and tell you where some of the wrestlers from this booking office are now.
