PNW #7 Page #2

5. Bull Ramos

Ramos stayed here almost continuous through the mid 70’s for 4 straight years, which was a very long stay. He became stale but the crowd still hated him. They hated him so bad that when he finally turned face, it really didn’t mean much. Usually it is just the opposite, the more the fans hate someone, the more they will love them when they turn. This wasn’t true with Ramos.

4.Soldat Gorky

He was the late 50’s and early 60’s version of a wildman. Bald headed with wild sideburns and beard. He also used the claw and wild stomps. His appearance helped with his drawing power and he was big in his time.

3. John Nord

Although his work has always been questioned. He came into the Northwest with such an explosion that people overlooked his work ethic. The first night here he took a chair to Mike Golden and gave him one of the stiffest chair shots I had ever seen prior to 1995. Mike Golden didn’t have a problem selling this as he looked to be in true pain. His back looked to bruise up immediately. After that John Nord doing a total Bruiser Brody was a top star.

2. Buddy Rose

Buddy Rose may have been the most successful heel in NW history. However all the before mentioned had a grotesque/burly or mean looking feature about them. Buddy Rose was nicknamed the Playboy. Roses looks didn’t make him a heel, it was his attitude. Rose was so good at being a heel, that when he turned babyface in a great angle. It just didn’t ring true, so he quickly turned back heel.

1. Mad Dog Vachon

Maurice Vachon in my mind was the best heel in NW history. He had the looks that could strike terror into anyones heart. No one ever thought about his size and he would often go up against much bigger opponents like Lonnie Mayne or Stan Stasiak. His first NW appearance he caused a riot and it only got worse after that. He ruled the NW in the early 60’s and is still remembered even today.

NEXT MONTH:

Lonnie Mayne
