Knoxville’s Number One Heel - Ron Wright

Nothing ignites a territory faster than a despicable heel. One that draws the heat by merely walking in an arena. Southeastern Championship Wrestling had such a heel in the legendary Ron Wright. Self proclaimed as Tennessee’s #1 hillbilly, Ron was more affectionately known to fans in East Tennessee as "Motor Mouth".

Ron was a local talent hailing from Kingsport, Tennessee. He wrestled nearly all of his career in and around the Southeast territory usually in a tag team that included his brother Don. This set of Wright brothers I dare say was more well known in Tennessee than those famous flying Wrights from Kitty Hawk. There was not a wrestling fan in East Tennessee that didn’t want a piece of those dastardly Wrights. Ron and Don reigned dominantly as the Tennessee State Tag Champs in Knoxville years before the Fuller based Southeastern Territory was formed in 1974. Slowly but surely Ron began to work outside of the realm of the team and using his tremendous mike skills ascended to status as the areas #1 heel.

Ron’s appearance was that of any other burly East Tennessean. In fact he could have easily been anyone’s overbearing uncle or brother-in-law. I guess that’s why he related so well to the area crowds. His in-ring ability was average as he relied mainly on brawling and underhanded tactics, but he had an uncanny ability to work a crowd. He could send a crowd into a frenzy, with a well-timed hair pull or by using an opponents trunks for leverage in a pin attempt. All along denying everything. His favorite finisher was the patented loaded boot technique. If the crowd wasn’t hot enough over his earlier tactics, they were definitely ready to go after Ron when they had to watch helplessly as he grabbed the top rope and began tapping his right boot on the canvas to load a foreign object into the toe of his boot. He normally set this up while the referees’ back was turned or shortly after a ref bump had occurred. It often concluded with Ron kicking his opponent in the head with the loaded boot and covering him for the three count.  More...
