At the next television taping, the match was shown on national television and Dusty was in the studio giving his commentary on the match.  At the conclusion of the replay, Bass came out to confront Dusty.  He said," Do you want to know why I did what I did?  Ever since we were itty-bitty kids, since grade school, every time we went out to play football little Virgil Runnels ran in for a touchdown, who was blocking for him?  Me, Ron Bass did the blocking.  Then we went on to college and the same thing happened again.  You got the headlines and I was the one in the background.  I am the Southern Heavyweight Champion, I was supposed to receive the title shot against Harley Race but no, Virgil Runnels got the title shot."

Dusty tried to reason with Bass and asked him what he wanted. Bass replied with a slap across Dustyıs face.  Bass then stormed off the set.  Dusty was visibly upset but he still claimed Ron Bass to be a close personal friend. " If it is the money, if it's the NWA World Heavyweight Title or the power I will give it to you."  Dusty did not want to believe that his friendship and business relationship with Bass was over.

Many believed that someone was behind Ron Bass' change of heart.  In his corner all along was JJ Dillon.  After Bass' attacks on his former friends , JJ became Bass' manager.  JJ fired all of his other wrestlers to concentrate solely on the " King of the Cowboys"  Ron Bass.
