Smoky Mountain Television from Mid-July/Mid-August 1994

 - Corey Morgan

For those who aren’t familiar with Smoky Mountain, a little history. Smoky Mountain Wrestling was an independent promotion that ran from 1992 to 1995 mainly in Tennessee and the surrounding areas. Unlike the other Indy feds at the time, Smoky wasn’t designed to be extreme and hardcore. Smoky Mountain was wrestling in the finest tradition of the old territories of the 70s and early 80s. Small crowds, good angles, and great 80s style old school wrestling made Smoky Mountain an oasis in a desert of a stale WWF, WCW and a fledgling ECW. Smoky Mountain’s motto was "Wrestling the way it used to be… The way you like it" And they were right. Their TV programming was a combination of 2 or 3 matches and lots of promos and interviews. Their TV shows usually were build ups to the various house shows that SMW put on, as well as their periodic big PPV caliber shows, where the big feuds would end, and others begin. Hopefully, my re-caps of Smoky Mountain TV will capture some of that old flavor. Enjoy.

Episode #1

VIDEO –
Jim Cornette shows off the enforcers of his union F.I.T.E. Bruiser Bedlam drags a horse cart filled with several big men. Killer Kyle takes the same men on in a Tug-o-War. Then Bruiser braces himself against a building and holds back a truck with his legs.

What is FITE you asked? Well a little history. The Federation of International Thugs & Eliminators (FITE) was formed by Jim Cornette when he couldn’t take the title of Commissioner of Smoky Mountain away from Bullet Bob Armstrong. As a result, he decided to form a union to take SMW out from under Armstrong. His first 2 members were Bruiser Bedlam and Killer Kyle. This is just one of the many funny angles that Jim Cornette created during his time running Smoky Mountain.

INTERVIEW – JAKE "THE SNAKE" ROBERTS & "DIRTY WHITE BOY" TONY ANTHONY

The story here: Jake and the "Dirty White Boy" Tony Anthony are involved in a bitter feud that started in April that saw Jake win the SMW title with the help of the masked Kendo the Samurai (don’t ask.). This was a very good feud with lots of back & forth mind-games by both men. At one point, we even see a second Kendo join the fray as DWB’s second. More...
