WWC #10 Page #2

March saw Invader defeating Stan Morowski in a taped fist match. Trinitarian  wrestler Ray Apollon came to Puerto Rico, where he was a mid level babyface. The war between Colón and Abdullah had another match, this time in a cage. Crazy Luke Graham came to WWC during the month and did a great tag team with a wrestler that came by the name Gorgeous George Jr., and they won the North American Tag Team Title from Colon and Froelich. A wrestler by the name of El Mongol came (I have scanned a picture of him, so if any reader wants to help with his identity, please feel free to contact me). Pierre Martel, aka Frenchy Martin, returned to the promotion. A match between Ciclon Negro vs. Mr Fuji with karate gloves was a main event. Gorilla Monsoon returned for a weekend.

April saw  Mexican wrestler Francisco Flores working WWC as Angel Mexicano. The war between Invader & Pierre Martel continued, to a point that Invader in a match got Pierre Martel boot (Martel's gimmick as the loaded boot) and had it for weeks. Gama Singh came to WWC as a heel. Bulldog Brower came in as a heel while Might Igor came as a babyface.

May saw Pierre Martel in a successful tag team with Mr. Fuji, winning the North American Tag Team Title. Dory Funk, who had been a heel for most of his early WWC stay, returned. David Sammartino, Bruno's son, debuted. The first WWC match between ladies took place with Dallas Cowgirl facing Judy Martin. A wrestler named Larry Lane debuted for WWC. Another 2 women came to WWC, Winona Little Heart and Vivian St. John.

June was the month that saw Mr. Fuji losing his hair againt Carlos Colón. Frankie Lane, who in 1979 came with Dutch Mantel, returned. Vikingo, who for months was  absent from WWC, returned for the promotion.  June was also a month very significant in our wrestling history because in a match between Carlos Colón & Jose Rivera facing the North American Champions Mr. Fuji & Pierre Martel. Martel lost by a mad move of the team and Fuji attacked him. Since then, Martel worked as a babyface, ending one of the most hottest feuds in our history, the Invader-Martels feud.

Martel returned in July to take revenge on Mr. Fuji, who contacted and added Toru Tanaka as his new tag team partner. WWC wrestlers for the second half of the year on the promotion were Martel, Fuji, Igor, Graham, Jose Rivera, Dory Funk, Apollo, Singh, Sammartino, Tanaka, Invader 2, Lane, Ciclon Negro and others. During the month, both Carlos Colón and Invader wrestled in Africafor a couple of weeks. Mini wrestlers Haiti Kid and Kid Chocolate wrestled here. A new wrestler using the name Dixie Pereira wrestled. The oddest couple of Invader 1 & Pierre Martell worked together for the first time, facing Fuji & Tanaka. Les Thorthon,  billed as The Junior Heavyweight champion, defended the title against Gran Apolo. Abdullah The Butcher returned once again.

In August, Invader had his taped fist and Pierre Martel with his 'loaded boot'  faced Tanaka and Fuji. Gorilla Monsoon returned to action. The Dominican star Jack Veneno along with  Mexican wrestler Judas (real name Jose Gonzalez,  Mexican born and due to personal things living for more that 25 years in Dominican Republic) came to WWC. Hugo Savinovich, had more in ring action, this time against Gran Apolo. They did a series of matches, including a cage match.

September saw Rick Martel returning to the promotion, this time as a babyface. Dutch Mantel returned to this promotion with a new tag team partner, Danny Coundrey, who later gained world star status as Honky Tonk Man in the WWF years later. In their biggest show of the year, that can be considered an Anniversary show due to the date it was held, had a tag team tourney to crown the newest North Amercan Tag Team Champions.  In  June the title was vacated due to the break-up of the team of Pierre Martel and Mr. Fuji. The teams that wrestled on the tourney were:   Carlos Colón & Jose Rivera Dory Funk & Terry Funk Pierre Martel & The Invader Proffesor Tanaka & Mr. Fuji Chief Thundercloud & Chief War Cloud Gran Apolo & Invader 2 Mighthy Igor & Jose Miguel Perez Dutch Mantel & Danny Coundrey Crazy Luke Graham & Gama Singh Abdullah The Butcher & The Sheik   Winners of the tourney were Carlos Colón & Jose Rivera. Their next challengers were picked from the winner of a match between Mr. Fuji & Tanaka and the team of Mantel & Coundrey. Mantel &  Coundrey won that match and subsequently wrestled for the title in  October. Big Red came to the island. Invader 2 turned on Invader 1 because Invader 1 picked Martel as tag team partner for the tournament.

October saw Mantel and Coundrey become the new North American Tag Team champions.  Colon wrestled his enemy Abdullah with Hugo Savinovich, Abdullah's manager, in a cage. Invader 2 and Martel continued their bloody war. Strongbow returned this month and had a war against Luke Graham, winning the Caribbean Title this month. Jack Veneno returned. Invader 1 returned and wrestled Invader 2 in a bloody war. They faced each other in a taped fist match. The craziest wrestler known as The Sheik came to WWC for a week.

November was the month that saw the wrestler Joe Novak returning to the promotion. He came in 1977. A strap match between Strongbow and Graham took place. Invader 2 was a full fledged heel. Japanese wrestler Mr. Onita and Johnny Rivera were part of the promotion. Onita became Fuji's new partner. Carlos Colón had a barbedwired match against Mantel.

The crew of WWC was almost identical in  December,  though Chico Santana & Haiti Kid came to do their matches. Carlos Colón defeated Abdullah to earn an NWA Title shot in the first WWC date of 1981. Fabulous Moolah wrestled for WWC facing Dallas Cowgirl. On the last show of 1980, Invader 1 defeated Invader 2 in a looser leaves Puerto Rico match. The WWC Tag Team Title was defended for the first time in 1980 when The Funk brothers wrestled Pierre and Ricky Martel and Colón faced The Sheik, that came for the third time that year.   As you see , 1980 was a great year for WWC. Big names as Abdullah, Brower, Graham, Monsoon, Fuji, Tanaka, Sheik and others gave their glory to WWC to make the promotion one of the longest living ever.

NEXT MONTH:

1981.
