Managers Part Two

Recap

Last month, we began a look at seventy personalities who worked in the territory from 1965-1989 as managers or valets. This month our look continues with the remaining thirty-five. We begin with a legend.

     Bobby Heenan

  •       Year(s) in territory: 1966 (appeared as Roy Heenan), 1978

  •       Managed The Masked Assassins, Nick Bockwinkel

  •       Interesting characteristic(s): Without argument one of the business' top five managers of all time, some say the greatest of all time. Made a handful of appearances in the area through the years. Worked some shows in the 1960s managing The Masked Assassins (Joe Tomasso & Guy Mitchell) who were appearing for Dick the Bruiser's Indianapolis-based promotion at the time. In the early 1970s, Heenan and a few others from the Indianapolis promotion worked some of the northern most cities in the Gulas-Welch promotion such as Evansville and Louisville on a few occasions. Gained his greatest fame initially in the WWA then the AWA. Was long time manager to AWA champion Nick Bockwinkel. When the AWA began working with the Jarrett promotion in 1978, Heenan accompanied Bockwinkel once to ringside in Memphis . Bockwinkel appeared for the next decade several times a year but Heenan did not return.

  •            Notable rivalries/feuds: Not enough appearances to list one

  • Bad Boy Billy Hines

  •       Year(s) in territory: 1977-1978

  •       Managed Gypsy Joe, Leroy Rochester, Buzz Tyler & Rip Tyler (not Dean Vaughn)

  •            Interesting characteristic(s): Had a lengthy successful ring career in the 1950s and into the 1970s working many of the Southern territories. During his ring career often teamed with "brother" Jimmy Hines. Entered the area in the fall of 1977 and although he served as lead manager at the time his presence was overshadowed by others including Lanny Poffo and Randy Savage.

  •          Notable rivalries/feuds (as a manager): Len Rossi & Joey Rossi

  •      Rock Hunter

  •           Year(s) in territory: 1977

  •           Managed Phil Hickerson & Dennis Condrey

  •         Interesting characteristic(s): One of the most well-known ringside managers of the 1970s made a brief stop in the area in 1977 after Jerry Jarrett broke loose from Nick Gulas. Hunter briefly managed the combo of Phil Hickerson & Dennis Condrey for Jarrett. Hunter would become only one of three managers the rough combo would have. The other two managers Hickerson & Condrey employed were Al Costello and Ron Wright. Hunter had been a solid wrestler who turned manager of The Masked Assassin II (Jody Hamilton) for Ann Gunkel's All-South promotion in Georgia . Hunter would later work for Georgia Championship Wrestling as well as other territories including for the Central States promotion and Bill Watts' Mid-South promotion and manage such stars as Abdullah the Butcher, Ivan Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff, The Masked Assassin and The Angel (Frank Morrell).

  •          Notable rivalries/feuds: Not in area long enough to list one
