After Starrcade, Orton and Slater then turned on someone else as they turned on Greg Valentine, but then they parted ways as a team. Slater concentrated on the U.S. title chase and Orton moved on to team with Don Kernodle and they won the NWA Tag Team belts in a tourney defeating the team of Dory Funk Jr. and Jimmy Valiant in Charlotte, NC on January 8^th 1984. Orton and Kernodle defended their belts for 2 months against the likes of Jay & Mark Youngblood, Rufus R. Jones & Dory Funk Jr., Wahoo McDaniel & Jimmy Valiant, and The Mosca’s. Orton and Kernodle would go on to lose the NWA Tag Team titles to Mark Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel on March 4^th 1984 in Charlotte, North Carolina and soon after this match, Orton would leave JCP to return to the WWF where he would become Roddy Piper’s main man “Ace.”
