 - Gary Lynch

Between 1965 and the early 1980's, Georgia Championship Wrestling was one of the hottest promotions in the National Wrestling Alliance. In the 60's and early 70's, many legendary performers such as Johnny Valentine, Buddy Colt, Freddie Blassie, Harley Race, Nick Brockwinkle and Ray Gunkel held the Georgia Championship. Between 1976-1982, The Assassins (Tom Rensto and Jody Hamilton) held the Georgia Tag Team Titles on ten different occasions. Between 1972-76, such teams as Eddie and Mike Graham, Robert Fuller and Bob Armstrong, Gene and Ole Anderson would hold the tag team titles. Back during this time period if the champion or champions would get purposely DQ’d in a match, the title would be held up and a rematch schedule.

The promotion would have wrestling shows all throughout Georgia. Shows were held in City Auditoriums, high schools gyms, sports arenas and outdoor football stadiums. There were even free wrestling shows held at Fulton County Stadium after Brave's games. The main wrestling events were on Friday nights at The Atlanta City Auditorium and on Wednesday night at Columbus Muncipal auditorium. About every 2 to 3 months a big show would be scheduled at The Atlanta Omni. Usually for events at the Omni, several big names wrestlers from out of state would come in. The promotion received national attention when it was learned that Lillian Carter, mother of then president Jimmy Carter, was a big wrestling fan. There was a picture published of Jimmy Carter meeting Mr. Wrestling 2.

Going into 1976, the Georgia Champion was The Masked Spoiler (Don Jardine) managed by Playboy Gary Hart. The Spoiler won the title from Mr. Wrestling 2 in October, 1975. Besides Mr. Wrestling 2, The Spoiler faced challenges from Dusty Rhodes, Bob Armstrong, and Mark Lewin. Mr. Wrestling 2 was also involved in a bitter feud with Stan Stasiak. Stasiak had made a vow to unmask the masked man. The Spoiler was known for his dreaded clawhold and Stasiak was known for the heartpunch, while Mark Lewin was known for the sleeper hold.

The Georgia Tag Team Champions at the end of 1975 were Les Thornton and Tony Charles. They vacated the belts in 1976. A tournament was held around May which was won by Ted and Jerry Oates. The Oates Brothers faced challenges from Thornton/Charles, Moondog Mayne and Stan Stasiak, Mitsu Harta and Yasu Fugi and Black Gorman/Great Goliath. The Mexican team would defeat the Oates Brothers in June to become champions. More...
