Back in Lubbock, the Sheik and Abby were booked in a tag match. Their opponents: Dory Funk, Jr. and Super Destroyer! While SD and Dory had feuded in the past, they put their differences aside to go after common enemies. SD had also been viciously carved up by the Sheik on a previous card in Lubbock so he had a double incentive for revenge. All four wrestlers were top draws in Lubbock so it was no surprise that the Coliseum was packed. Dory and SD dominated the match from the outset. Dory even managed to body slam the Butcher. The Sheik attempted to use a foreign object but had it knocked out of his hand. JJ attempted to retrieve and give it back, but it was intercepted by Dory who proceeded to pound the Sheik’ head with it. The Sheik rolled out of the ring and began approaching JJ. JJ began slowly backing up, hands raised in pleading fashion. His apology was to no avail as The Sheik grabbed him by the tie and began pounding him to the delight of the crowd. Abby immediately dashed from the ring to rescue JJ. As Dory and SD watched in amusement, The Sheik and Abby began slugging it out. The ref called for the bell to DQ JJ’s team. Abby and The Sheik battled into the ringside seats. Fans rushed to a safe distance in all directions. They fought past ringside along the pathway from the dressing rooms. They fought up the stairs in front of the dressing rooms. At the top of the stairs, it appeared that the Sheik was going to throw the Butcher to the floor. Instead, he turned toward the fans in the general admission seats and rushed toward them. A sea of humanity frantically raced the opposite direction. I have never before seen one man terrify hundreds in such a fashion. It is fortunate that no one got hurt that night as someone could have easily been trampled in the chaos. As the fans were scurrying a safe distance away, Abby recovered and resumed the battle. I’m not sure where the fight ended. I have never seen such riveting insanity at a wrestling match. Until the next week, that is, when Abby and The Sheik were booked against each other in a grudge match.

The following Friday in Lubbock, Sheik and Abby squared off with JJ in Abby’s corner. It was pretty much the same chaotic bloody brawl. It was a double DQ (no surprise). However, this time the two not only battled all over the arena, they ended up in the Coliseum parking lot fighting on the trunk of a car, surrounded by hundreds of fans. Again, I’m not sure how the battle ended or how the two were separated. At 13, I wasn’t tall enough to see over the crowd. While the crowd loved the wild, out of control blood bath, one question remained unanswered: Could anyone defeat Abdullah the Butcher?

NEXT MONTH:

Abby takes on the Super Destroyer in a German Blood match, Ric Flair meets Abby in Amarillo, and Abby suffers his first loss in the territory, in the final installment of "The Butcher invades Amarillo."
